The Roma are a colorful people of Indian descent, who have migrated all over the world, including Brazil. They are typically poor, lacking education and proper medical care, and with a low social status. Today, the Roma Vlach of Brazil number over 350,000. Some tend to conceal their Gypsy origins, but others are more open about their heritage. The Roma are typically engaged in trade; most are merchants, entrepreneurs and a small number still practice their craft as coppersmiths. The Roma typically adopt the religion of their host country but maintain many superstitions and characteristics of their own unique beliefs, which are a mixture of pre-Christian and Eastern religions.
