The first German village was established in Brazil in 1824 shortly after the Brazilian government invited Germans to colonize vast areas of newly acquired land. Today the German influence can be seen through architecture, customs and cuisine. Germans are responsible for creating a middle class in Brazil, as well as introducing both beer and the Protestant faith. Today areas of German colonization are among the wealthiest parts of Brazil, with the notably low levels of unemployment and illiteracy. The German peoples of Brazil are primarily Lutheran and Catholic, but most are nominal and the Gospel is not widely understood.
