Migration from Italian to France has been common since prehistoric times. The countries are closely related due to shifting of land borders as well as mixed ancestry of such notable leaders as Napolean, who was from Corsica, an Italian region ceded to France in the 1700s. In fact, approximately nine percent of France’s population can trace its roots back to Italy. But closeness breeds contempt and the two countries are fiercely competitive. Everything from football to fashion to political power is an opportunity to earn bragging rights and prove superiority.
