Pastors’ wives conference in Russia brings encouragement
Karen Jones of First Baptist Church, Crockett, Texas, traveled 30 hours and 15 time zones to arrive at Z Region* to meet with 15 Russian women –pastors’ and leaders’ wives in desperate need of renewal and refreshment.
UNREACHED CITY: Kostroma, with a population of 278,000, is part of the Golden Ring in Russia located on the Volga and Kostroma Rivers just 65 km east of Yaroslavl. The grand dukes in ancient times used Kostroma, as a place of retreat during sieges. It was ravaged twice by the Poles and devastated by a great fire, but the city has been rebuilt in a beautiful way. Currently there are 4 Baptist churches in the surrounding area. Intercede that it will become a place of spiritual retreat.
UNREACHED CITY: The city of Komsomolsk on the Amur has a population of 280,000. Komsomolsk, which means the “City of Young Communists,” is located in the Russian Far East on the banks of the Amur River. Komsomolsk is a city of young people looking for something in which to believe. Communism was not the answer and now these young people are wandering with no direction in life. The Baptist church in this city is seeking to develop ministries that will reach young people for Jesus. Just as the Amur River flows freely through the city of Komsomolsk, ask that the River of Life will flow freely through the young people in this strategic city.
UNREACHED PEOPLE GROUP: The Komi are part of the north Siberian reindeer herders and number about 300,000. They are scattered all over the northern Urals and northwest of Siberia. The first missionaries to the Komi developed the Komi alphabet before 1400. However, today it is difficult to tell an urban Komi from an urban Russian by any other criteria than language. The northern Komi have intermingled with Nyenets, who are also a reindeer herding people. Their religious roots point to Orthodoxy and shamanism so very few people understand having a personal relationship with the Son. Intercede that this will change soon.
